For an engine to function efficiently, for every one gallon of gas, the engine must ingest 14.7 gallons of air. That’s quite a bit of air at over the lifetime of an air filter, that means a lot of debris can be trapped inside the filter, depending on how long it is on the vehicle and how many gallons of gas that are burned. This is critical that the air filter is replaced because if it’s blocked or damaged, it can’t ingest that 14.7 gallons of air compared to the one gallon of gas. So, we now know that this air filter is having to filter a lot of air to burn the gas in the tank, and it can also impact how the vehicle operates between oil changes. So, how do you know when an air filter needs to be replaced? GM? Well, they got a solution. Their air filter monitor looks at data from the mass airflow sensor and also the number of miles driven, or even the gallons of gas burn to estimate how much air this filter has filtered.

This way, it can make an accurate estimate on what the life of the filter is and when the customer should have it replaced. Should it be right away within the next 2,000 miles or during the next oil change? Well, it can estimate that and alert the driver with warnings on the dashboard. To reset the monitors, you can do it through the button presses and the menus on the dashboard, but the easiest way to do it is with a scan tool with the latest software. Just keep in mind these started in 2019 on the V6 Camaro, not the V8, and it continues to be added to other vehicles with the two liter Ecotec engine and also on some of the SUVs. So, keep this in mind when you’re replacing an air filter on a newer GM vehicle that you have to reset that monitor. I’m Andrew Markel. Thank you very much.
